Drama of love, loss and resilience

Set during the years when World War 1 devastated France, the battle front only makes two dreamlike appearances in director Xavier Beauvois’ meticulously crafted, slow-paced drama. Instead the focus is on a family farm and the women who have been left behind to manage alone while the men are away. Adapted from a 1920s novel by Ernest Pérochon, the film escorts us through the seasons spanning the years from 1915 to 1920, meticulously detailing the changing face of agriculture and society in France. Every frame of Beauvois’s film looks like a painting come to life, and the performances are superb.
