Critics Consensus: Faithful to the source material without sacrificing its own cinematic flair, Justin Kurzel’s Macbeth rises on the strength of a mesmerizing Michael Fassbender performance to join the upper echelon of big-screen Shakespeare adaptations.
Macbeth is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of literature’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war torn Scotland.

Sat Feb 4 – Les Amours Baroques with Hannah Medlam
Local singer Hannah Medlam, together with father Charles Medlam on the bass viol, and London thoerbo player William Carter will present a programme of songs and court airs from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, interspersed with instrumental items on their period instruments.
Hannah studied singing in Vienna, Paris, Amsterdam and Marseilles, before taking to the opera stage in Holland (Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème), Montpellier (Janacek’s Cunning Little Vixen) and Limoges (Lady Pamela in Aubert’s Fra Diabolo). She opted for a period of further study in Rome to improve her bel canto and spoken Italian and is now firmly back on the concert stage with engagements in England, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Japan planned for the 2017/18 season. She sings frequently with London Baroque and has recently discovered the lute song repertoire. She will perform songs for the restoration stage by Henry Purcell, court airs by Michel Lambert, church and chamber works by Monteverdi, and Handel’s only French cantata in imitation of domestic Parisian music-making at the turn of the eighteenth century.
Charles will play a series of bass viol pieces on his 1689 Barack Norman. These will go from the sublime, Marin Marais’ lament for his teacher Jean de St. Colombe, to the ridiculous, a description of a bladder stone operation! The theorbo, also know as the chitarone, is the largest of the lute family instruments and has a series of bass courses, as well as the normal strings above a fingerboard. William Carter will be playing virtuoso music by Johannes Kapsberger, who, in spite of his name, was actually Roman and largely responsible for putting the instrument on the map.
The musicians will introduce their instruments and their sometimes unfamiliar music.
It promises to be a fascinating evening’s music-making in the intimate setting of The Croft Hall in Hungerford.
Fri 3 Feb – I, Daniel Blake
Rotten Tomatoes
Critics Consensus: I, Daniel Blake marks yet another well-told chapter in director Ken Loach’s powerfully populist filmography.
Daniel Blake (59) has worked as a joiner most of his life in Newcastle. Now, for the first time ever, he needs help from the State. He crosses paths with a single mother Katie and her two young children, Daisy and Dylan. Katie’s only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city she doesn’t know, some 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man’s land, caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy as played out against the rhetoric of ‘striver and skiver’ in modern day Britain.

About Gigspanner
Since his departure from folk-rock pioneers Steeleye Span at the end of 2013, legendary fiddle player Peter Knight has turned his full attention to his trio Gigspanner, and in the process has firmly established their burgeoning reputation as one of the most innovative acts on the folk/roots scene.
Hailed by Songlines as “another milestone in folk’s rebirth of cool” and by the late Sir Terry Pratchett who poetically observed “Peter Knight can spin the world on his Bow“.
There is however far more to Gigspanner than meets the eye, and to categorise these virtuoso performers purely as folk musicians would be to significantly undersell them, and to deny audiences the full scope of their musical embrace.

Wed March 29: Clover Stroud, ‘The Wild Other’
This is a memoir of love, loss, motherhood, sex and danger. Broadcaster, writer and journalist Clover Stroud says:
“I had a very unconventional and very happy childhood in Wiltshire, which ended in the most violent way when my mother suffered fell from her horse out riding and was left horrifically brain damaged. This early experience of loss and trauma has informed everything I have done since then.
Mum’s accident sent me out into the world on a journey that took me to the brink of self destruction, where I sought wild experiences in the form of wild horses, sex, narcotics and wild men. The book is also about the devastating power of nature to destroy and heal, and I hope that my five children will not be alarmed by it.”
Travelling from gypsy camps in Ireland, to the rodeos of west Texas and then to Russia’s war-torn Caucasus, Clover eventually found her way back to England’s lyrical Vale of the White Horse.
The Wild Other is a grippingly honest account of love, loss, family and the healing strength of nature. Powerful and deeply emotional, this is the story of an extraordinary life lived at its fullest.

‘Compelling and candid, deftly weaving together past and present…a heart-wrenching story told in haunting, lyrical prose.’ Tatler

From director John Carney (ONCE, BEGIN AGAIN), SING STREET takes us back to 1980s Dublin seen through the eyes of a 14-year-old boy named Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) who is looking for a break from a home strained by his parents’ relationship and money troubles, while trying to adjust to his new inner-city public school where the kids are rough and the teachers are rougher. He finds a glimmer of hope in the mysterious, über-cool and beautiful Raphina (Lucy Boynton), and with the aim of winning her heart he invites her to star in his band’s music videos. There’s only one problem: he’s not part of a band…yet. She agrees, and now Conor must deliver what he’s promised – calling himself “Cosmo” and immersing himself in the vibrant rock music trends of the decade, he forms a band with a few lads, and the group pours their heart into writing lyrics and shooting videos. Inspired by writer/director John Carney’s life and love for music, SING STREET shows us a world where music has the power to take us away from the turmoil of everyday life and transform us into something greater.

Directed by the great Mira Nair, the film hits you like a shot in the heart. Nyong’o and Oyelowo are both extraordinary, giving newcomer Nalwanga a chance to shine as Phiona grows into her own woman.

The story is true, and the message it delivers-with care and help, the disenfranchised can become role models and inspire others-is unabashedly sentimental, but in a good way.

Critics Consensus: Queen of Katwe is a feel-good movie of uncommon smarts and passion, and outstanding performances by Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo help to elevate the film past its cliches.
“Queen of Katwe” is the colorful true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion. Directed by Mira Nair (“Monsoon Wedding”) from a screenplay by William Wheeler (“The Hoax”) based on the book by Tim Crothers, “Queen of Katwe” is produced by Lydia Dean Pilcher (“The Darjeeling Limited”) and John Carls (“Where the Wild Things Are”) with Will Weiske and Troy Buder serving as executive producers. The film stars Golden Globe (R) nominee David Oyelowo (“Selma”), Oscar (R) winner and Tony Award (R) nominee Lupita Nyong’o (“12 Years a Slave”) and newcomer Madina Nalwanga. For 10-year-old Phiona Mutesi (Nalwanga) and her family, life in the impoverished slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda, is a constant struggle. Her mother, Harriet (Nyong’o), is fiercely determined to take care of her family and works tirelessly selling vegetables in the market to make sure her children are fed and have a roof over their heads. When Phiona meets Robert Katende (Oyelowo), a soccer player turned missionary who teaches local children chess, she is captivated. Chess requires a good deal of concentration, strategic thinking and risk taking, all skills which are applicable in everyday life, and Katende hopes to empower youth with the game. Phiona is impressed by the intelligence and wit the game requires and immediately shows potential. Recognizing Phiona’s natural aptitude for chess and the fighting spirit she’s inherited from her mother, Katende begins to mentor her, but Harriet is reluctant to provide any encouragement, not wanting to see her daughter disappointed. As Phiona begins to succeed in local chess competitions, Katende teaches her to read and write in order to pursue schooling. She quickly advances through the ranks in tournaments, but breaks away from her family to focus on her own life. Her mother eventually realizes that Phiona has a chance to excel and teams up with Katende to help her fulfill her extraordinary potential, escape a life of poverty and save her family. Disney’s “Queen of Katwe” will open in U.S. theaters on September 23, 2016.
